<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">My family and I went to visit some family in West Virginia for New Year's eve and I got the chance on January 1 to start the new year right! I managed to slip in some rod and reel time in the small lake in the neighborhood we were visiting.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">I ended up choosing to fish with a drop shot rig using a small number 2 fishing hook, a 3/8 oz sinker and a small green finesse style worm. The weather was COLD for me, about 35 degrees and breezy. I managed to get 3 bites and landed two nice rainbow trout, the largest being about 17" long!
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">All in a great trip spending time with family and a little fishing to start 2016!
It's been quite some time since I updated the old blog. So I found some pictures on the iphone from back in April of a couple trips my brother in law and I took to a local lake. We landed a bunch of really nice bass using swimbaits and shallow running crankbait lures. We caught a number of 5-6 pound largemouth bass and had a couple days when we caught a dozen or more each! We fished out of my "new" 14' Basstracker Topper jon boat, I will be adding some pictures of my boat and document changes and upgrades I make and future plans. It is a great fishing platform and should serve me well for years to come! Get out there and wet a line!

Shallow and mid-depth crankbaits are a killer tool in the fall.

If the conditions line up well, you can certainly catch big fall bass by deep cranking creek ledges throughout the fall. A more consistent pattern, however, comes from utilizing shallow squarebills and mid-depth crankbaits.

Target shallow flats—You should primarily target the 3 to 6-foot range and focus on shallow flats very close to creek channels. These flats are natural stopping
Quick Tip: A straight retrieve will certainly catch crankbait fish, but an erratic retrieve will result in more bites. Try a stop-and-go approach and try to collide your crankbait into any available cover. Small irregularities in its swimming action will create a lot of reaction strikes.
Water clarity matters—In dirty water, bass will get dirt-shallow and hold close to stumps and laydowns. For moderately clear water, I have more success on the Chikara 200 Series, which targets the 4 to 6-foot depth range.
Cover water quickly—A good trick for fall fishing is putting the trolling motor on high and keep moving until you find something worth making multiple casts to fish are going to be in groups, so it’s important to move quickly until you find a school of active fish. The quicker you eliminate dead water, the faster you can get on a big sack of fish.
Magic water temperature—You can catch hundreds of bass on these crankbaits throughout the fall, but your biggest fish will move shallow when the water temperature gets into the 50-degree range.
Keep changing it up— Shad patterns kick ass in the fall, but the bass can get very peculiar when they school. If you’re getting short strikes, it’s probably not a color issue. More than likely, they want a different action. Make sure you keep switching between wide wobbling and flat-sided crankbaits for the best results because every school you find will be different.
It all starts here, with the rod and reel. The spinning reel is, in my opinion an absolute must. They can be used with any type of lure and are easy to use and maintain. When you are using small lures such as light jig heads and weightless worms, this is the one to have.
I am a huge fan of Shimano reels, they have a wide selection and a variety of prices. Abu Garcia is another great reel manufacturer and you really can't go wrong with either of these.

Now is a killer time if you love crappie fishing. The water is warming up and these fish are getting hungry after a long, cold winter. It's also spawning season ( give or take depending on your location) and crappie are ready to rock!
As the water gets up above 60 degrees they become more active and hungry and will chase a wider variety of lures. I love small crankbaits, in- line spinners, beetlespins, and jig/ bobber combos. Be sure to have a variety of colors for your jig trailers so you can find what the crappie want.
Now get out there and catch some slabs!

Well I finally broke open the piggy bank and upgraded to a Nucanoe Frontier 10. I have only had her out one time, but I am in love with this craft! It has the best stability I have seen in any kayak, I was able to stand up and cast with no problem. The raised seat is extremely comfortable and was very easy on my bad back, the ability to stand and cast is also a welcome relief for weary backs and knees after hours on the water. I can't recommend this kayak enough, if you get the chance to try one I know you will love it too.
When I saw the weather report a few days ago, I knew I HAD to do some fishing! High of 73 in December, love it!
I decided to hit a small pond in our next door county. I had fished there a few weeks ago and managed a few small bass and crappie.

I only fished from the bank and caught 12 crappie, 2 small bass and a tiny bream. Not a bad for a few hours and I loved every minute of it. I caught most of them using a 1/8 oz Road Runner jig with a pink tube trailer. This is a great little crappie rig and even bass like them. I like it in cold water because you can absolutely crawl them along, most fish are moving a little slow in December so I like something I can fish slow.

Never fear...I HAVE NOT stopped fishing! An extremely busy summer at work and at home put a damper on my blogging.
I will post a few sccess stories from the summer. The first being a trip to the New River in southwest Virginia with my nephew.
We left early and drove up to Foster Falls where we put the kayaks in. We floated about 4 miles down the river with frequent stops at promising fishing spots and to eat some lunch. I managed to land 14 smallmouth bass and missed another 6 that I really should have gotten into the boat!
I was using Texas-rigged crawdads and pumpkin green 5" senko style worms. An awesome trip in one of the most beautiful places I know of! The picture is of my nephew Chance in his 10 foot Pescador.

It's a 10' Future Beach Spirit 120 I got from Craigslist for $200 including the paddle. I added a swivel rod holder in the front and a crate with pvc tubing for rod holders on the back. I have only had her out a few times, the pic on the left is from back in August on the New River in Virginia. I absolutely love it, it tracks great, is stable and has plenty of room for my gear.
I know there are a lot of "kayak snobs" who think you need a $1500 'yak, but just get what you can afford that will get you on the water! TIGHT LINES to all!!!
Saturday evening was awesome, I caught over a dozen bass! The smallest was a pound and the biggest nearly four pounds, I caught 6 that were in the 2-3 pound range! I caught a couple with a white 1/2 ounce spinnerbait and the rest on a topwater wake bait. It was the perfect combination of the right bait, the right place and the right time! Possibly the best 2 hours of fishing I have ever had!
I caught her on a topwater lure cast over a transition point from shallow to deep water. I love catching bass on topwater lures, poppers, frogs, wakebaits are all a blast to catch with. Even small fish are fun to catch, just seeing them blast the surface and swallow a topwater lure gets my heart racing. I like to cast them near stumps, rocks, weeds, or any structure in the water. I let the lure sit there for a few seconds before reeling, then work it back to me with an erratic retrieve. Keep in mind how most frogs or bugs move in short jerks and twitches, you need to imitate the bass' natural prey.
My brother in law and I hit a couple small ponds near his house. The first hour and a half was slow for me, with only a 2 pounder boated while my bro in law was slaying the crappies and had caught about 7 or so. We decided to walk down to the other pond and fish off the bank for a bit, and I'm glad we did! I caught 3 more bass, the last of which was this sweetheart shown here. I caught her on a topwater lure as dusk approached. She inhaled it about 40 feet from the bank and put up an epic struggle as I held my breath! I didn't have my scales with me and we could only estimate her at close to 8 pounds! Keep in mind I am 5'10" and 205 pounds myself, so she was a really nice bass! I released her and I hope to get another shot at her- next time I will have my scales in my pocket!

In this part of NC, the largemouth bass is King and the most sought after species. I do enjoy going after crappie and bluegill at this time of year.
Last week we went to a small pond in search of some of these small and fiesty fish! My son caught this nice crappie in his very first kayak fishing trip. I was more excited than he was! I caught about 6 and had fun watching my boy paddle around, he did great. We used some 1/8 oz Roadrunners and small in-line spinners, both favorites of panfish. Another fun time!
The weather was perfect and the water is getting warm. I started out with a shallow diving chartreuse Strike King crankbait and caught a nice little one pounder on my 5th cast! The pace slowed and over the next hour I wore out the hinges on my tacklebox as I tried spinnerbaits and crankbaits of every color! I was beginning to get frustrated. Then I remembered the new pack of 1/8 ounce Roadrunner Jigs I had bought on sale back in the winter. It was a great choice, as over the next 2 hours I caught 4 more bass, 4 nice crappies and 2 bluegill. Can't wait to go back!
The weather has been better and the water was not as cold as the last few times I have been fishing.
I decided that I would try some smaller baits due to the relative size of the pond that I reckon was about a quarter of an acre or so. This seemed to be the right choice and I caught 4 small bass from a half pound up to about one pound in the 2 hours I was there.
I used a white Chatterbait jig and a Beetlespin with a white grub. These are usually pretty reliable and once again proved their worth!
So I hit a local pond with a buddy in his jon boat. The water is still cool and extremely muddy due to all of the rain we have had. I did manage to land 4 decent bass, the largest being nearly 2 pounds. I caught 2 on a 4" Chatterstick and 2 on a small Chatterbait jig with a white curl-tail grub trailer. These seem to show up well in dingy water and have incredible vibration. All in all a great afternoon!
I struggled for a long time with finding the best knot for me. If you are a knot-master then just ignore this post, but if you need help like I did, pay attention.
The Palomar knot fit the bill for me. It's pretty simple to tie and is very strong. So practice it a few times and I think you will like it as much as I do.
